Red Dog Operations invests in Alaska’s future leaders
Red Dog is proud to support the ongoing development and advancement of our employees.
- Under the Teck Alaska Incorporated/NANA Agreement, an Employment and Training Committee is mandated to develop initiatives that will maximize the number of NANA shareholders working at the operation. Under the committee’s oversight, Red Dog Operations has an ambitious on-the-job training program and extensive student development efforts. Almost 17,000 hours (well above the industry average) of on-the-job training was provided in 2009 to shareholders.
- Workforce development programs include on-site training in every area of operation, trade apprenticeships, and opportunities in advanced technical training in the geological, metallurgical and environmental fields.
- Qualified employees are encouraged to train co-workers which helps develop a diversified, multi-skilled workforce.
- Red Dog employees wishing to return to school can apply to participate in the mine’s job-share program. The innovative program allows employees to balance work and school while maintaining their eligibility for employment at the mine.
Scholarships, training and education programs sponsored by the mine also provide support for the region’s youth, specifically in the areas of mining, engineering, and industrial maintenance.
- Ninety-nine students received over $120,000 in post-secondary scholarships in 2009.
- Ongoing career awareness, job shadow and mentorship programs encourage students to learn about employment opportunities that are viable and close to home.
